Padar Island
A 20-minute climb to Indonesia's most famous three-bay viewpoint
Padar's viewpoint — three curved bays with different-colored sand fanning out below a dragon-back ridge — has become the single most photographed image to come out of the Komodo National Park boat trips, and unlike the dragon treks, the hike here is short enough for almost anyone.

The climb
A stepped path leads from the beach landing to the main viewpoint in about 20–30 minutes — steep in sections but short, with no dragon-safety concerns since Padar itself doesn't have a resident dragon population unlike Komodo and Rinca.
Timing for the view
Most liveaboard itineraries schedule Padar for sunrise, before the day-boat crowds arrive from Labuan Bajo — the early light also brings out the color contrast between the bays' sand more than harsh midday sun does.
Beyond the main viewpoint
Further ridgeline trails continue past the main platform for those wanting fewer people in their photos and a higher vantage — ask your guide about the extended route if the main viewpoint feels crowded.
Practical tips
- —Sunrise timing (via an overnight liveaboard) beats a midday day-trip stop for both light and crowd levels.
- —Bring proper shoes — the path is a mix of packed earth and stone steps, doable in trainers but not flip-flops.
- —The full round trip (climb up, viewpoint, back down) takes under an hour — an easy add-on to a Komodo dragon day trip.
- —No dragon safety briefing is needed here, unlike Komodo/Rinca — but bring water regardless, there's no shade on the climb.
