Sumba

Wild horses, megalithic tombs and empty surf breaks few travelers have heard of

Sumba

Sumba sits south of Flores and stays off most Indonesia itineraries entirely — no volcanoes, no famous temple, just savanna, wild horses, animist Marapu villages with megalithic stone tombs, and some of the least crowded surf breaks in the country. Nihiwatu (now Nihi Sumba) put it on the luxury map, but budget travel here is still genuinely rough-and-ready.
