The world's most populous island and the seat of Jakarta, but also home to the two biggest reasons people add Java to a Bali trip: Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple on Earth, and Mount Bromo, whose volcanic caldera sunrise is one of Southeast Asia's most photographed views. Yogyakarta ("Jogja") is the cultural capital — batik, gamelan, the Sultan's palace — and a far more relaxed base than Jakarta.

April–October (dry season); Bromo sunrise tours run year-round but roads are best in dry months
