Gili Trawangan ('Gili T') is the biggest and most developed of the three islands, with a genuine nightlife scene — beachfront bars, fire dancers, and a backpacker energy that Gili Air and Gili Meno deliberately don't try to match. It's also got the best range of dive shops, restaurants and accommodation of the three.

The party scene
Bars along the main strip rotate 'party nights' between them through the week, a long-running informal system that keeps one central spot busy each night rather than splitting crowds thin. It's a genuinely social, backpacker-heavy scene — busiest June–August and around New Year.
Beyond the bars
Trawangan isn't only nightlife — a walk or bike ride around the island's perimeter (roughly 2 hours at an easy pace) takes in quiet beaches on the east and south sides, sunset spots on the west, and a small hill at the island's center with a viewpoint over the other two Gilis.
Day-to-night contrast
Daytime Trawangan is genuinely calm — swimming, snorkeling right off the beach, diving trips out — and only shifts into party mode after dark. If you want the daytime beach experience without the nightlife, basing on the quieter east side works well.
Practical tips
- —Bikes and horse-drawn cidomo carts are the only transport — factor that into how far from the main strip you're comfortable staying.
- —The quieter east and south coasts have the same clear water as the main strip with a fraction of the crowd.
- —Book accommodation further ahead for June–August and New Year — this is the most popular of the three islands and fills up.
- —If nightlife isn't your goal, Gili Air or Gili Meno may suit you better — Trawangan's whole identity is built around its social scene.
