Which Thai Island Should You Pick
Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Krabi and the smaller islands compared — genuinely different trips under one name
"Thai islands" covers wildly different experiences — a Phuket beach resort, a Koh Phangan Full Moon Party, and a quiet Koh Lanta bungalow have almost nothing in common beyond the ocean. Picking the wrong one for what you actually want is the single most common regret first-time visitors report.

Phuket
Thailand's largest island and the easiest to reach — its own international airport, direct flights from a huge range of countries. Patong is the loud, resort-and-nightlife end; the island also has quieter beaches (Kata, Kamala) and functions as a launch point for day trips to Phi Phi and the Andaman islands.
Koh Samui, Koh Phangan & Koh Tao
This trio in the Gulf of Thailand is reachable by a short flight to Samui or a ferry connection between islands. Samui is developed and family-friendly with its own airport; Koh Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party but has a genuinely quiet, longer-term-expat side away from Haad Rin during the rest of the month; Koh Tao is the budget-diving island, small and laid-back.
Krabi, Phi Phi & the smaller islands
Krabi province's limestone karst coastline (Railay, Ao Nang) is a different look entirely — dramatic cliffs, rock climbing, longtail-boat island hopping. Phi Phi is stunning but genuinely crowded at its famous viewpoints; Koh Lanta and Koh Yao Noi are the quieter, less-developed alternatives in the same region for anyone actively avoiding crowds.
