After a record 7.05 million foreign arrivals in 2025, Bali's provincial government is shifting its 2026 tourism strategy away from chasing ever-higher visitor counts and toward attracting visitors who genuinely contribute to the island economically and behave respectfully while here.

The new screening approach reportedly looks at three things: financial stability, planned length of stay, and the kind of activities a visitor intends to do — part of a marketing shift that leans more toward luxury wellness, spiritual retreats and legitimate digital nomadism than budget backpacker traffic.

For most travelers arriving with a normal itinerary, onward travel booked and enough funds to cover their stay, this shouldn't change much in practice — it echoes existing entry requirements (proof of onward travel, sufficient funds) that immigration has always had the discretion to check, just with more emphasis behind them now.
