Paris needs little introduction — the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, a genuinely walkable historic core — but France rewards heading south too: the French Riviera's Nice, Cannes and Monaco pack Mediterranean coastline, film-festival glamour and a completely different pace into a few hours' train ride from the capital.

Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) in Paris — major global hub with direct flights from nearly everywhere; the TGV high-speed rail connects Paris to Nice in about 5.5 hours
