Bali's LRT Is Actually Under Construction Now

After breaking ground in late 2024, Bali's long-discussed light rail transit project has moved into active tunnel-boring as of April 2026, for Phase 1 connecting the airport to Kuta and Canggu — two of the most congested corridors on the island.

One genuinely interesting detail: the system is being built 30 meters underground specifically to respect Balinese cultural and religious regulations around building heights and land use near temples — a constraint that's shaped a lot of Bali's infrastructure decisions over the years.

Phase 1 is targeted for completion by 2028, with later phases eventually extending to Sanur and Ubud by around 2031. None of this helps anyone's traffic today, but it's the first sign the LRT talk of the past few years is turning into an actual construction project rather than another announcement that stalls.
