Kuta Lombok
Not Bali's Kuta — a laid-back surf town with some of Indonesia's best uncrowded beaches
Sharing a name with Bali's famously chaotic Kuta but nothing else, Kuta Lombok is a small, low-rise surf town on the island's south coast, surrounded by a string of dramatic bay beaches — sharp green hills, white sand, and surf breaks that are still genuinely uncrowded by Bali standards.

The beaches around town
Tanjung Aan, with its two crescent bays split by a headland, is the standout — walkable from Kuta, with warm shallow water good for swimming as well as surf further out. Mawun and Selong Belanak, a short scooter ride away, are quieter still and popular with beginner surfers.
Surfing
Kuta Lombok's breaks range from beginner-friendly (Selong Belanak's sandy-bottom wave) to more serious reef breaks further along the coast (Are Guling, Mawi) for experienced surfers — with a fraction of the crowd you'd find at an equivalent Bali break.
The town itself
Kuta Lombok has grown fast but stayed low-key compared to its Bali namesake — a walkable strip of warungs, surf shops and small guesthouses rather than beach clubs and high-rises. It works well as a 2–4 day base for beaches, day trips to Mandalika and Pink Beach, or a jumping-off point before Rinjani.
Practical tips
- —Rent a scooter — the best beaches (Mawun, Selong Belanak, Are Guling) are a 15–30 minute ride out of town, not walkable.
- —Tanjung Aan's split bays have different conditions on each side — check both before picking a swimming spot.
- —Sunday market and occasional beach cleanup events are a good way to meet the town's small expat/surf community.
- —Book accommodation ahead during July–August and around Indonesian public holidays — the town's popularity has grown quickly.
