For One Week, Black Rock City Functions as a Fully Equipped Temporary City

Black Rock City isn't just a festival campsite — for the week of Burning Man, it runs its own airport, emergency services, community radio station and vehicle department, then disappears entirely.

For the roughly nine days it exists each year, Black Rock City functions as a genuine temporary city rather than a conventional festival ground — it has its own emergency medical and fire services, an airport (Black Rock City Municipal Airport, used for small aircraft and skydiving operations), and a Department of Mutant Vehicles that licenses the event's decorated art cars.

One of the more distinctive pieces of infrastructure is BMIR — Burning Man Information Radio — broadcasting on 94.5 FM in the week leading up to and during the event. It began as a way to deliver emergency and practical information to the whole community at once and is run by a volunteer crew handling everything from the transmitter and antenna to sound and IT.

After the event, the entire city is dismantled and, per Burning Man's 'Leave No Trace' principle, the site is meant to be returned to the same bare desert condition it was in beforehand — a genuinely unusual commitment for something briefly larger, in population, than many small American towns.
