Hanoi Starts Construction on Five New Metro Lines Spanning Over 300km

Hanoi launched construction on five metro lines simultaneously on June 22, 2026 — Line 1 (81km), Line 2 (56.5km), Line 8 (91km), Line 10 (43km) and Line 14 (32km) — totaling more than 300km, the largest urban railway investment program in the city's history. The lines will serve the main urban areas, Noi Bai International Airport and new development zones.

Line 1 represents the biggest single investment at roughly VND 389.5 trillion (about $14.8 billion), with the Vinhomes-VinSpeed consortium serving as the EPC contractor. The city aims to substantially complete the five lines by 2030, part of a broader master plan targeting around 979km across 18 urban rail lines by 2045.

For travelers, meaningful change is still years out — these lines won't open until later in the decade — but the scale of the project signals a genuine shift underway in how the capital plans to move both residents and visitors around a city where traffic is currently one of the most common visitor complaints.
