Pokhara & Annapurna

A lakeside city with a direct view of the Annapurna range, and the trailhead for Nepal's most popular trekking region

Pokhara & Annapurna

Pokhara is Nepal's second city and its most popular base outside Kathmandu — a relaxed lakeside town with a jaw-dropping direct view of the Annapurna range on a clear morning, and the starting point for the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill treks, which together draw more trekkers each year than the Everest region.

Quick facts

From Kathmandu: ~25 min flight, or 6–8hr by road
Poon Hill trek: ~4–5 days round trip, beginner-friendly
Annapurna Base Camp: ~7–12 days, ~4,130m
City highlight: Phewa Lake and Sarangkot sunrise viewpoint

Pokhara itself

Phewa Lake, with rowboats and a lakeside strip of cafes and gear shops (the Lakeside/Baidam neighborhood), is the city's center of gravity — a genuinely pleasant place to spend a couple of days even without trekking, with Sarangkot's sunrise viewpoint above town giving one of Nepal's most reliable Himalayan panoramas for the effort involved (a short drive or hike up).

Poon Hill — the short trek

The Poon Hill trek (around 4–5 days round trip from Nayapul, near Pokhara) is the most accessible serious trek in the region — no technical difficulty, lodge-to-lodge accommodation the whole way, and a sunrise viewpoint at 3,210m with a genuinely wide Himalayan panorama including Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range. It's a realistic option for a first multi-day trek.

Annapurna Base Camp and the full Circuit

Annapurna Base Camp (around 7–12 days depending on route and pace) goes deeper into the range, reaching a natural amphitheater of peaks at around 4,130m. The full Annapurna Circuit, historically 15–20+ days, has been shortened for many trekkers by new roads reaching further into the valleys — worth asking a trekking agency about the current realistic route length rather than assuming the classic multi-week version, since road access has changed the trek meaningfully over the past decade.

Practical tips

  • Sarangkot at sunrise is worth doing even on a short Pokhara stay — it's a short taxi/hike, not a trek commitment, for a real Annapurna panorama.
  • Poon Hill is a solid choice if you want a genuine multi-day trekking experience without Everest Base Camp's altitude and time commitment.
  • Lodge-to-lodge trekking in the Annapurna region means you generally don't need to carry camping gear — check with your agency on what's actually needed versus rented locally.
  • Ask specifically about current road access when planning the full Circuit — it's a meaningfully different, often shorter trek than it was a decade ago.
