Nungwi & Paje: Zanzibar's Beach Coast

While Stone Town holds Zanzibar's history, Nungwi in the north and Paje on the east coast are where most visitors actually spend their beach time — different enough from each other in character that picking the right one matters as much as picking Zanzibar itself.

Nungwi
Nungwi, at Zanzibar's northern tip, has minimal tidal swing compared to much of the island's coast — meaning swimmable water at most tide levels, unlike beaches further south where low tide can leave a long walk to reach the water. It's also the island's liveliest beach town, with the widest range of restaurants, bars and a genuine sunset-watching culture along the beach each evening.
Paje and Jambiani
Paje, on the east coast, is Zanzibar's kitesurfing capital — steady trade winds and the area's characteristic wide, shallow lagoon at low tide make it one of East Africa's best kitesurfing spots, with schools offering lessons for beginners. The tidal swing here is dramatic, though — check tide times if swimming (rather than kitesurfing) is the priority, since low tide exposes a long stretch of sandbar rather than swimmable water.
Choosing between them
Nungwi suits travelers who want reliably swimmable water and more nightlife/dining density; Paje suits kitesurfers specifically and those drawn to a quieter, more spread-out village feel with dramatic tidal landscapes. Both are a realistic 1.5–2 hour drive from Stone Town and the airport, so combining Stone Town with either beach base is standard.
Practical tips
- —Check tide charts before choosing a beach base if swimming (not kitesurfing) is your priority — Nungwi has more consistent swimmable water, Paje's low tide pushes the water far out.
- —Book kitesurfing lessons in Paje through an established school with proper safety certification — conditions here are genuinely serious enough that this isn't an area to shop purely on price.
- —Nungwi's sunset is a genuine daily social event — beach bars fill up specifically for it, worth planning dinner around rather than missing it indoors.
- —Both beach areas are a similar drive from the airport (roughly 1.5–2 hours) — factor that into planning rather than assuming one is meaningfully more convenient than the other.
