A small, wealthy Gulf peninsula turning into one of the region's busiest hosts for major world sport
Qatar built an entirely new stock of world-class stadiums and arenas for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and rather than let them sit idle it's kept bidding for — and winning — major global events since: the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup is the latest, with Doha's compact skyline and efficient metro making it one of the easier single-city tournament hosts to actually attend. Outside event calendars, Qatar's appeal is Doha itself — the Museum of Islamic Art, the Souq Waqif, and a corniche skyline that's changed dramatically in under two decades.
Best time to visit
November–March, when temperatures are comfortable — Qatar's summer (May–September) is extremely hot and humid, genuinely difficult for outdoor sightseeing
Getting there
Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha is a major long-haul hub, especially for Qatar Airways connections between Europe/Americas and Asia/Oceania
