Český Krumlov's Old Town sits inside a tight S-curve of the Vltava River, its castle complex — the second-largest in the Czech Republic after Prague Castle — rising above red-roofed medieval buildings that survived the 20th century largely untouched, earning the whole town UNESCO World Heritage status.

The castle complex
Český Krumlov Castle spans five courtyards and includes a genuinely unusual 17th-century Baroque theater (one of the few in the world still using its original stage machinery, opened for limited tours) and a striking pastel-painted tower offering the town's best panoramic view. The castle gardens, less crowded than the main complex, are worth the walk for their own sake.
Walking the Old Town
The town is compact enough to walk end to end in under 30 minutes, but the winding medieval streets, the main square (náměstí Svornosti) and the riverside paths reward slower wandering — this is a place where getting deliberately lost for an hour is a genuinely good use of time, not wasted time.
Day trip vs. overnight
Most visitors day-trip from Prague (roughly 2.5–3 hours each way by bus or train), which is workable but rushed — an overnight lets you see the town in the early morning and evening light without day-tripper crowds, when Český Krumlov's atmosphere is at its best.
Practical tips
- —Stay overnight if the schedule allows — the town transforms once day-trippers leave in the late afternoon, and morning light before the crowds arrive is genuinely different.
- —Book castle theater tours in advance if visiting in peak season — access is limited and specifically timed given the fragility of the original 17th-century stage machinery.
- —Comfortable shoes matter — the Old Town's cobblestone streets and the castle's uphill approach aren't friendly to anything else.
- —Combine with České Budějovice (the actual source town for Budweiser-style beer, about 25 minutes away) if extending the trip beyond a single day.
